ABSTRACT

With my dissertation my aim is to dig deeper into Jim Jarmusch’s world view and understand how he strives to fascinate his audiences with these uncommon and almost bizarre characters, places, stories and what makes him such an uncommon and different example from what we see in other directors. It is also a way to explore how truly independent cinema works and the value and possibilities of being away from the studio system. For this dissertation I researched through his life, influences and methods. The main body of this dissertation is divided into five chapters, where I explore his origins, personality, way of approaching the art of filmmaking, his unique style, the influence his collaborators have on his work and how music and sound lives in this director’s films. In order to achieve this, the research was mainly focused on the reading of books and essays written, complemented by a continuous watching and rewatching of his filmography, interviews and Q&A’s throughout this the duration of this study. This research was further augmented by the opportunity I had to travel back home to Lisbon, Portugal, in order to have the pleasure of seeing Jarmusch present his latest work. I did, however, try to write this piece by adding lot of my personal observations and understanding of Jarmusch’s work that I have been gathering through the years, without ever letting it cloud my judgement and using the authors and research to support those ideas and observations.
